After Effects for Character Animation

After Effects: In the Beginning…

Adobe After Effects version 1 Adobe After Effects version 1

Adobe After effects has been the go-to software for motion graphics and special effects for over a decade. The first versions of this software were created even before Adobe! After Effects was originally created by the Company of Science and Art in Providence, RI, USA. Version 1.0 was released in January 1993. Version 2.1 introduced PowerPC acceleration in 1994. CoSA along with After Effects was then acquired by Aldus corporation in July 1993; this company was then acquired by Adobe in 1994, and with it PageMaker and After Effects. Adobe’s first new release was version 3.0.

Typically, it was used for small sequences in video projects, the go-to software for 2D animation has been Flash, which some still use to this day. But applications of this software have dramatically changed since then.

What about 2016?

As we enter 2016, this is pretty much ancient history. Today, many people use after effects to create full animated movies. The industry is changing: the demand for animated videos is growing exponentially. Adobe’s software is one of the easiest to use solutions, but still requires a learning curve for someone that wants to create an animated video.

Since Adobe introduced the creative cloud option, it’s become much more accessible. Instead of thousands of dollars of upfront cost, one can purchase a $9.99 subscription.

Today, one of the primary uses is in explainer video production. Smaller companies and many freelancers use the tool as opposed to bigger studios as in the past. Quick turnaround and medium quality of animation are valued more than high end compositing features once defining this software.
